Released in early 1971, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) remains one of rock's most enduring paradoxes. The lyrics specifically addressed the imminent departure of John's brother, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, who left the group shortly after the single's release.

Written by frontman John Fogerty, the song appeared on CCR's sixth studio album, Pendulum . Despite their massive commercial success, the band was fractured by creative tension and power struggles.

The "rain coming down on a sunny day" is a literal description of a sunshower, used here as a metaphor for the band's predicament: they were at the sunny zenith of their fame, yet felt miserable and depressed.
