The story follows his grueling through the Arctic wilderness of Northern Norway toward neutral Sweden while being hunted by the Gestapo, led by the relentless (and partially fictionalized) SS officer Kurt Stage .
The film is set in during Operation Martin Red , a sabotage mission involving 12 Norwegian resistance fighters trained in Scotland. After their fishing boat is intercepted and sunk by a German gunboat, 11 of the men are captured, tortured, and executed. Baalsrud, the eponymous "12th man," is the sole survivor to evade capture.
