The Djinn was bored. For a being that had spent five centuries trapped in a brass oil lamp, boredom was a relative term, but living in the Staten Island pantry with Guillermo de la Cruz was a new level of administrative tedium.
Nandor the Relentless sat on a pile of decorative Persian rugs, staring intensely at the lamp. He rubbed it with the sleeve of his velvet cape. With a weary puff of purple smoke, the Djinn appeared, holding a clipboard and wearing his signature vest.

As Nandor led a bewildered Marwa upstairs to meet Nadja and Laszlo, the Djinn checked a box on his form. He looked at the remaining wishes and then at the messy pantry. With a small, rebellious smirk, he used a fraction of his own power to make a small plate of very high-quality dates appear on the shelf.
The Djinn snapped his fingers. In a whirlwind of gold dust and ancient magic, a woman appeared in the center of the room. She was dressed in exquisite silks, looking exactly as she had the day Nandor left for the Crusades. She blinked, looking around at the dusty basement, the stacks of old National Geographics, and the vampire in a cape. The Djinn was bored
Being a magical slave was exhausting, but at least the drama in this house was better than sitting in a dark lamp.
“I have been thinking,” Nandor said, his eyes wide with a rare spark of inspiration. “I wish for a companion. But not just any companion. I want my favorite wife back. Marwa.” He rubbed it with the sleeve of his velvet cape
